Traditional consumer router: right for year one

An Asus RT-AX88U or TP-Link Archer AX90 running stock firmware is the correct starting point for most home labs. You get basic VLANs, a usable UI, and zero ecosystem lock-in. Upgrade when you need IDS/IPS, proper VLAN trunking to managed switches, or a rack form factor.

Ubiquiti Dream Machine: best polished ecosystem

The UDM Pro ($499) is the benchmark for self-hosted network management. All-in-one router, IDS/IPS, VPN server, and UniFi controller in a 1U rack appliance. The learning curve is real but the GUI is the most approachable enterprise-grade interface available. Buy it if you want a polished single-pane-of-glass view of your entire network and are willing to go all-in on the UniFi ecosystem.

MikroTik: maximum flexibility, steeper curve

MikroTik RouterOS is what network engineers actually use. The CRS326 ($219) gives you 24 ports of managed switching plus full routing capability — VLANs, BGP, OSPF, firewall rules, traffic shaping, all configurable via CLI or Winbox. It's the right choice if you want to learn enterprise networking fundamentals rather than just manage a polished UI. Expect to spend 4–8 hours getting comfortable with Winbox before the flexibility pays off.
